During the British era, this city served as the educational capital of Rajasthan. Its origins can be traced back to the Dwapara Yuga. Ajmer’s tales of romance have been documented here for the first time, and the fascinating history of the city’s renowned havelis has also been brought to light. Key tourist attractions include the air-conditioned 'Sheesha Khan' (Mirror Chamber), Taragarh—the first hilltop fort—the Chishtiya Dargah, the exquisite Jain temple 'Soniji Ki Nasiyan', the thousand-year-old Ana Sagar Lake, and the 'Dhai Din Ka Jhonpda' (originally the Saraswati Temple), among others. This city was the largest province of Mughal-era Hindustan. It was also here that the world's longest war—the Battle of Haldighati—concluded with a treaty between Jahangir and Maharana Amarchand.
